A brief look at the university – Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science

Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science (RFUMS) is a private graduate school located in North Chicago, Illinois, USA. It is located to the south of the Great Lakes Naval Training Center and the North Chicago VA Hospital. The institution formerly had another name, but was renamed in honour of Rosalind Franklin, the well-known DNA crystallographer, whose work with X-ray crystallography provided the data and scientific basis for description of the structure of DNA, the single most important advance of modern biology. In fact, the Seal of the University brings to mind Photograph 51, which is her X-ray diffraction pattern for B-DNA, something that was pivotal in the history of biology. All these make for interesting history!

RFUMS, then known as The Chicago Hospital-College of Medicine was founded in Chicago by a group of physicians and community leaders. From the beginning, this university, long known as The Chicago Medical School, rejected the use of quotas to limit minority enrolment. The leaders of the school believed that only a student’s merit should play a role in the admissions process. The university offers over 15 study programs in graduate health-related subjects. RFUMS provides PhD programs for medical and basic research. There are approximately 1,500 students enrolled at the university and there are over 700 faculty members.
